Artistic process

If the forms of his live arts pieces are very varied, the basis of his interest stays the same: an interrogation of non–verbal communication and our perception of it – our perception of daily movements, the construction of body language, mimicry, and beyond that, the appearance of dance movement. In this way, he has created dance pieces, performances or displays that provoke a questioning of codes of social behaviour, often in a playful spirit. As well as this, his works, often hybrid or multidisciplinary, put into play the place of the spectator (participatory and/or interactive performances). Since 2009, David Rolland developed specific systems of scores to guide professional dancers or non-dancers to perform his pieces.

David Rolland studied contemporary, jazz and classical dance. Having obtained his national diploma to teach dance, he worked as a dancer with choreographers Odile Duboc, Béatrice Massin, Blanca Li, Mié Coquempot and Laura Scozzi. In 1997 he founded the gallery Ipso Facto with two visual artists, Jean-François Courtilat and Jean-François Guillon. The exhibition space in Nantes shows the work of young contemporary artists and sets up exchanges with similar structures in France and abroad. Enriched by these different experiences, in 1999 David Rolland turns to choreography and founds the Ipso Facto dance Company with dancer and choreographer, Angela Fagnano. He has developed his work in a more personal manner since 2004 under the name of David Rolland Chorégraphies.
